Online Resources for Teaching Arabic

An Arabic curriculum was developed by LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) Arabic Team through the QFI (Qatar Foundation International) curriculum grant awarded 2012-2013. The curriculum included twelve units (6 units for Arabic level 1, and 6 units for Arabic Level 2). The project aimed at creating a hybrid module that compliments and supplements face to face instructions in LAUSD's schools. The course was built using Moodle (a Course/ Learning Management System) creating an effective online learning forum that LAUSD's teachers can use to expand on students skills and knowledge beyond school hours.

This website was created in an effort to share the materials created for this project with the world. Any teacher can access the curriculum materials by downloading them from this website in PowerPoint or PDF format.

About Arabic in LAUSD

With a national initiative and federal support, LAUSD (Los Angeles Unified School District) established a pioneering program to teach Arabic at LAUSD starting with Bell High School in summer 2008. It was the first Arabic program in a public school in California. The Arabic program started then with one course, and now offers multiple courses for various levels in four public and charter schools: Bell High School, Roybal Learning Center, Student Empowerment Academy, and Granada Hills. Many Arabic courses meet subject-e LOTE (Language Other than English) requirement for high school graduation as well as admission to the University Of California (UC) and the California State University (CSU): Arabic 1, Arabic 2, Arabic 3, Arabic 4, and Arabic 4Honors.

Arabic Level 1:

This course focuses on listening and speaking in a basic context so that students can learn to initiate a conversation. Students learn frequently used sentence patterns that allow them to communicate on a basic level, which supports their development in both reading and writing. The course will also compare Arabic and American cultures. These activities will help students understand the distinctive characteristics of the humanistic perspective; understand the historical and cultural factors of the Arab world in a global context. This humanistic perspective will be applied to values, experiences and meanings in one's own life. By the end of this course, successful students will be able to demonstrate their grounding in the receptive and productive modes of a variety of tasks. Students are expected to reach an oral proficiency of Novice Low- Novice Med at the end of this course.

Arabic Level 2:

This course provides students with the opportunity to bridge with the Arabic language and cultures from the Arab World. Through a varying spectrum of language tasks and cultural products and practices ranging from quotidian and customary practices to special celebratory events and festivities, inherent to Arab communities in the said regions, students will be actively engaged in learning about diverse facets of the life of teenagers in the Arab World. At the end of the year, students would have developed not only a simple and basic familiarity with some cultural concepts but would rather give a better proof of understanding of that very same culture from the inside. Arabic II connects language learning to other subjects (e.g., connections to nutrition, food pyramid, in health science). Students are expected to reach an oral proficiency of Novice Med- Novice High at the end of this course.
